A Look at Jack Plummer's Historic Holiday Bowl Performance

America buzzed about Miller Moss' prolific performance last night, but the other quarterback's performance was worthy of attention too.

Miller Moss made a compelling argument for consideration as a Heisman Trophy sleeper for 2024. Moss showed the Trojans their quarterbacking future was bright with a record-setting six-touchdown performance against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl. This electric performance made fans overlook the other quarterbacking masterclass occurring across the field.

Jack Plummer was a marksman last night for Louisville. Plummer completed 21/25 for 120 yards. His 84% completion percentage tied Teddy Bridgewater's 21/25 performance against USF for the second-most accurate performance with a minimum of 20 passes. Only Bridgewater's 25/29 performance against USF in 2013 was better than Plummer's mark.
Louisville has never seen accuracy this remarkable in a bowl game. None of the top performances listed in the Louisville football record book, regardless of the minimum amount of completions, occurred in a bowl game. For context, 2016 Heisman winner Lamar Jackson never completed more than 50% of his passes in any of his three bowl games for the Cardinals.

Jack Plummer's accurate performance going largely unnoticed is a macrocosm of his 2023 season. Few, including myself, realized that Plummer threw for over 3000 yards this season. Plummer's 3,204 yards is the eighth-best season yardage output in Louisville history. His total exceeded quality seasons by Louisville legends Chris Redman, Stefan LeFors, and Dave Ragone in the record book. With Jawhar Jordan and Isaac Guerendo combining for over 1900 yards on the season, it was easy to overlook Plummer.

The narrative labeling Plummer as a game manager is easy to believe when he threw for only 145 yards in their biggest win against Notre Dame. However, this article could serve as a homage to Plummer's stellar 2023 season. Plummer did something Malik Cunningham never did over a whole season and had accuracy Lamar Jackson never displayed in a bowl game despite his Heisman pedigree. Let us never forget Jack Plummer's 2023 Holiday Bowl signature performance.
