Less than a month after John Haneline departed YSU to become the co-defensive coordinator at Georgia State, the Penguins landed an experienced coach to guide the defense in 2026.
After a season in which YSU allowed 31 points and 393.2 total yards per game, adding a proven defensive coach was a priority.
Ryan Riemedio comes to Youngstown after spending four seasons as the head coach at Mercyhurst and serving as the assistant head coach from 2018 to 2021.
In 2021, Riemedio coordinated a defense that ranked top-50 in multiple categories, including rushing defense, passing yards allowed, and fourth-down conversions. In addition to the unit’s success, four players earned PSAC West All-Conference honors, highlighting Riemedio’s commitment to both team and individual development.
As Mercyhurst's defensive line coach in 2019, Riemedio guided a top-notch front line that ranked 13th nationally against the run, allowing 96.2 yards per game.
In 2017, Riemedio’s defensive line allowed 12 fewer rushing touchdowns and 25.3 fewer rushing yards per game compared to 2016, fueling one of the program’s most significant defensive turnarounds.
Before coming to Mercyhurst, Riemedio spent three years coaching at Monterey Peninsula College (JUCO) in Monterey, California.
With the Lobos, he was involved with coaching defensive backs, linebackers, defensive line, and coordinating the punt return and kickoff special teams. He was also involved with the strength and conditioning program.
In his final season in Monterey, Riemedio was promoted to defensive coordinator, coaching two All-State and 12 All-Coast Conference defensive players.
Riemedio’s background in defensive development and program building now shifts to Youngstown, where he will be tasked with reshaping the Penguins’ defense ahead of the 2026 season.
