The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have exorcised the demons of a 1-11 season a year ago by hiring former Marshall head coach Charles Huff, who brought 25 former players from his Sun Belt Conference (SBC) champions, the Marshall Thundering Herd, to Hattiesburg. Among those talented transfers is quarterback Braylon Braxton.
Braxton will be the most experienced signal-caller behind center for the Golden Eagles in quite some time. He has 30 career games under his belt as a collegiate player at Marshall and Tulsa. In 2024 with Marshall, Braxton led The Herd on a seven-game winning streak and a Sun Belt Conference championship.
Last season was a breakout year for Braxton, who accounted for over 2,200 yards of total offense and 23 touchdowns. He protected the football by limiting the turnovers to just two INTs on the season.
Braxton accounted for 269 total yards and five TDs against Appalachian State. In the Old Dominion game, he accounted for 350 yards of total offense and threw for three scores.
Over the last four games of last season, Braxton threw zero INTs and nine touchdowns on his way to being named the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year and second-team All-SBC.
Braxton's production and skills also earned him an invitation to be a counselor at the most prestigious quarterback academy in the country, the Manning Passing Academy.
Braxton has played the game of football since he was seven years old and is a football legacy. His father, Ronnie, was a standout safety at the University of Houston.
The Golden Eagles have not won eight or more games since the 2017 season. Coach Huff and Braxton will lead the Golden Eagles on the field Aug. 30 when they host the Mississippi State Bulldogs and with one mission: to lead Southern Miss To The Top!
