Last month we reported that Virginia Military Institute would be promoting Patrick Ashford to become their next offensive play-caller.

With their new offensive coordinator set, head coach Scott Wachenheim and company are finalizing their staff. VMI announced today that they would be hiring Bilal Marshall to fill Ashford's old role as wide receivers coach.

Marshall is a former Purdue wideout from South Florida who spent the last two seasons at West Virginia University as an offensive graduate assistant.

VMI's wide receivers excelled under Ashford and former offensive coordinator Billy Cosh, who accepted the same role at Richmond. Marshall will need to replicate the record-setting success VMI had in the spring 2021 season which included wideout Jakob Herres taking home Southern Conference Player of the Year.

This past season VMI ranked 4th in the SoCon for scoring offense with 32.2 points per game and 3rd in total offense with an average of 450.5 yards per game. VMI's pass offense ranked 3rd in the SoCon with 282 yards per game, just 55.1 yards behind Western Carolina in first.
